Dear friends, we invite you to join the charity part of the project “Portal Through the Centuries: Bohuslav Carols” on 25 December 2022!
We have two options to offer for you:
The first one is to invite our carollers to carol at your place – all the money raised will be donated to the Bohuslav Volunteer Headquarters.
What is required for this option?
Please send us a message: with your name, address and why you would like us to visit your place. We will definitely respond!
The second is to create your own carolling group.
What is required for this option?
- You need to gather a team of like-minded people who are ready to sing carols with you.
- Select a format: with characters or just in traditional clothes, or in modern outfits, etc. If necessary, create a script and learn a few songs. Get together for a rehearsal at least a couple of times.
- Think about and prepare props (goat, Christmas star, etc. Please note, we can provide help with the star).
- Make a list of your friends and acquaintances who would like you to sing carols to them.
- Please agree among the participants what share of the money you make during carolling you are ready to donate to the Bohuslav Volunteer Centre.
- Please let us know that you are planning to participate and write to us if you need a star. We have the templates and we can share them with you, but you still need to paint and decorate them yourself.
- On 25 December, at noon, please come to the designated place (to be announced), where we will meet to greet each other and go carolling.
- On 27 December, we meet at the Bohuslav Volunteer Headquarters to debrief the results of the carolling.
Our recommendations:
- Choose to visit people you know, as strangers may not be ready to receive you and you should respect this.
- Please let people know that you are raising money for charity. It is important.
- While researching the Bohuslav carols, we discovered that the traditional religious nativity scene, in which participants dressed up as characters from the story of Jesus Christ, was not typical for the Bohuslav region. The texts of the carols we found during our expeditions closely intertwine folk and religious stories. The characters of the performances were mostly folk imagery: Goat, Grandfather, Grandmother, Soldier, Cat, Gypsy, Jew, Doctor, etc. So we would recommend them, but it’s up to you to choose.
Koliada (carolling in Ukrainian) is a very old and important tradition for Ukrainians. Traditions are what distinguish us from our enemies and what they have been trying to destroy for centuries.
We would be happy if you could support us in reviving traditions and in philanthropy. After all, Christmas is a time for good deeds!
