Vintage Clothing of Community to Be Investigated and Digitised in Bohuslav

‘Khroniky Obukhova’, 20.05.2024

Activists in Bohuslav, Obukhiv district, are launching the ‘Clothing and Tradition. Bohuslavshchyna’ project to explore vintage clothing that has survived to the present day.

The researchers plan to digitise all the clothes kept in the museum and personal collections, in particular, in the funds of the Museum of the History of Bohuslav Region, in museum rooms at village club branches, and in private collections.

The project also aims to engage representatives of the professional community in discussions about the active involvement of representatives of the communities of wearers in identifying, studying and documenting their living heritage, which today, in times of war, forms the basis of resilience and identity.

To do this, activists:

– Will take at least 25 ethnographic and local history expeditions to the villages of Bohuslavshchyna.

– They will search for clothing items from the Bohuslavshchyna in the collections of leading Ukrainian museums.

– They will publish at least 10 videos from the expeditions on their YouTube channel.

– They will set up a photo studio and digitise vintage clothing and photographs.

– They will develop scientific passports for clothing items from the Museum of the History of Bohuslav Region.

– The website of the ‘Around Us. UA’ NGO will create a virtual map of the Bohuslavshchyna, which will feature a digitised collection of clothing items and digital copies of old photographs.

– A three-day event ‘Round Table & Training: Ethnography and Modernity’ to present the results of the project and raise the issue of the need for cooperation between communities and researchers in shaping an effective policy for the protection of cultural heritage and socio-cultural development.

Why is digitisation essential?

– russia is tageting its missiles to destroy our people, our towns and villages, and one of its targets is our culture, which is evidence of belonging to the Ukrainian nation.

– Many Ukrainian museums, archives and libraries have already suffered from russian shelling, along with thousands of exhibits, valuable books and documents.

– Due to digitisation, many of them were not lost but were recreated and thus preserved using digital copies.

– In addition, like any other material thing, vintage and old clothes tend to deteriorate over time, and a digital copy will always look the same as it did when it was filmed.

‘You can also help us preserve folk costumes from Bohuslavshchyna for history. If you have samples of such clothes or photos of people wearing them, you can contact us and we will digitise and collect all the necessary information about them. Please email us at aroundus.ngo@gmail.com,’ the activists encourage.
