Dear friends! Today we would like to share with you not only some lovely memories but also some great news!
We are planning several amazing events on May 18th, for Vyshyvanka Day!
Today we are announcing one of them: the workshop “Traditional Wax Wreath from Khokhitva”!
First of all, we would like to tell you about the wreath as an integral part of the look of a young Ukrainian girl in ancient times. Just like an embroidered shirt or other elements of women’s clothing, a wreath could tell you about a girl’s social status, age, and where she came from.
In addition to its aesthetic function, the sacred headdress also served as a protective talisman. Each region had its own traditions of designing, making, and wearing wreaths.
And now to the announcements! On the occasion of Vyshyvanka Day, the team of the “Around Us. UA” NGO decided to organize a workshop for all those interested, where we will learn how to make a traditional wax wreath! Moreover, it is a unique one of the village of Khokhitva in Bohuslavshchyna!
So, what to expect at the workshop?
- You will learn about the history of the wax wreath, when and till what age one could decorate their head with wreaths.
- You will learn about the materials used to create this decoration, as well as the technology of its manufacture.
- You will make the individual elements of the wreath yourself, so that you can recreate the whole composition later on.
We would like to tell the community residents even more about the set of traditional women’s clothing!
The workshop will be conducted by Kateryna Zubko, a craftswoman from Khokhitva. She is a dedicated person who honours, preserves and passes on the traditional art of Ukrainians to future generations.
