The ‘Portal Through the Centuries: Bohuslav Carols’ project continues!
Last Sunday we visited the ‘musical village’ of Rozkopantsi again. In the village library, we had a chance to meet the first members of the legendary Rozkopanchanochka group. The women told us about their youth, local traditions, clothes and food, sang songs and several unique carols. They warmly recalled their youth and how weddings were arranged in the village. They also commented on the hard work on the collective farm and the phenomenon of speculation.
We also visited our elderly ladies, Varvara Lozenko and Liudmyla Riabchun, who shared their wisdom and we plunged back into the past: life in the village, working on the collective farm for ‘labour days’, unpretentious food ‘from what they had’ and quiet celebrations of Christmas and New Year holidays, mostly ‘at home’ due to the bans. That is why there are very few carols and shchedrivkas that have survived. Their memories of Christmas in Rozkopantsi can be found here.
We continue our trips to Bohuslavshchyna.
Please note: We are looking for people who have collected and are currently collecting songs, carols, local traditions, etc. We invite you to share your findings so that they become known to a wider audience. Also, if you have elderly relatives or friends who can share their memories of traditional Christmas celebrations, sing carols, tell us about the customs of celebrating the New Year holidays, cuisine, outfits, implements and utensils, etc., please help us to get to know them! We will be grateful for your help in organising the expeditions.
