A Roundtable Discussion “Dialogue of Cultures: Multicultural Bohuslav”

The roundtable “Dialogue of Cultures: Multicultural Bohuslav” engages expert researchers in discussing the topics of multiethnic coexistence within a small community, tolerance towards different ethnic groups living in the same territory, as well as the historical and cultural context of such coexistence.

The programme of the event includes two panels with reports by historians, cultural experts, public figures and the opening of a comprehensive exhibition “Religious Communities of Old-World Bohuslav”.

9:30-10:00 – registration, morning coffee break.

10:00-10:30 – official opening of the roundtable. Presentations by invited guests.

10:30-12:00 – Panel I. The historical aspect of the coexistence of ethnic groups: Ukrainians, Jews, and Poles in the 19th – early 20th centuries:

– “Coexistence of Ukrainians, Jews, and Poles in the Bohuslav Community of the 19th – early 20th Centuries: Shared Characteristics and Distinct Ethnic Traditions” Oksana Palchyk, an independent researcher, local historian.

– “The Events of 1917-1921 in the Fate of the Residents of Bohuslav (Ukrainians, Jews, and Poles)”

Andriy Rukkas – PhD in History, Associate Professor at the Faculty of History of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

– “Soviet Repressions Against the National Communities of Bohuslav in the First Half of the 20th Century.”

Ruslana Martseniuk, PhD in History, Chief Researcher at the Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine.

12:00-12:30 – coffee break.

12:30-14:30 – opening of the “Religious Communities of Old-World Bohuslav”, a three-part exhibition that is displayed in different locations within Bohuslav:

– “Orthodox Churches of Bohuslavshchyna”.

– “Engravings by Napoleon Orda: Roman Catholic Churches”.

– “Synagogues of Bohuslav. Forgotten History”.

14:30-15:00 – lunch for lecturers and guests. Coffee break for the audience.

15:00-16:30 – Panel II. Modern approaches to the activities of intercultural practice hubs. Challenges of identity and memory in localities and solutions thereto:

– “Memory and Culture of Solidarity”

Krzysztof Czyżewski, a co-founder and director of the “Borderland: Arts, Cultures, People” Centre in Sejny (Poland) and the International Centre for Dialogue. Public figure, philosopher, poet. Lecturer at universities around the world, visiting professor at Rutgers University (USA) and the University of Bologna (Italy).

– “Intercultural Dialogue as a Foundation for Local Development”

Oleksandr Butsenko, Director of the Democracy through Culture Development Centre, Advisor to the Directorate of the Institute of Cultural Studies of the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, Consultant to the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, member of the UNESCO International Network of Facilitators.

– “The Foundation of Our Identity”

Valentyna Demian, Head of the Expert Council on Intangible Cultural Heritage at the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, researcher on cultural heritage.

– “Ways to Restore the Memory of Traditions and Culture using the Case of Local Initiatives of the “Around Us. UA” NGO

Andriy Humeniuk – co-founder of the “Around Us. UA” NGO, historian, public figure.

Cultural workers, local authorities, scientists, local historians, and public figures are invited to join the event as offline listeners, where they will have an opportunity to take part in the Q&A. Also, visitors are invited to attend the opening of the exhibition “Religious Communities of Old-World Bohuslav”.
