The chest and photo saloon, retro picnic and old-world musicians, interactive pantry and authentic cuisine of Bohuslavshchyna, workshops and a fair of goodness! Bohuslav Volunteer Headquarters together with the “Around Us. UA” NGO start the autumn season with a historical and cultural charity event “Portal Through the Centuries: Old-World Bohuslav” and invites you to join us!

This is a genuine time machine! You will enter the portal and travel back to nineteenth-century Bohuslav when Ukrainians, Jews and Poles lived in the city. You will get to know folk crafts, the famous Bohuslav Fair, customs and traditions, local cuisine, singing, and clothing.

“Portal Through the Centuries: Old-World Bohuslav” has united concerned individuals who are thirsty for authentic Ukrainian history and culture, and those who also financially support our defenders.

We would like to tell you more about the variety of amazing sections of our event. So let’s get started! What to expect here:

“CHEST”: here you will see and try on Ukrainian ancient clothing, braid your hair and tie a shawl the way our great-grandmothers used to do it. Create your own Old-world look and take photos in an old-fashioned photo saloon.

RETRO-PICNIC with a themed photo zone. Feel the atmosphere of the nineteenth-century Bohuslav at a historic picnic and an elegant photo zone.

“PANTRY”: old household items. Find out what and how our ancestors used in their households and try to work with the tools of labour that our grandmothers used.

KIDS’ PLAYGROUND: games, entertainment, quests, photo zones, educational and an entertainment programme for younger guests.

“GYMNASIUM”. Here we will tell and show how students studied 100 years ago, what they used to write with, what they read, and what desks they sat at.

OLD-WORLD MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS. Attempt to play and listen to the lyre, kobza, old-world bandura, and the ‘troyisti muzyky’ (triplet musicians).

PRESENTATION OF THE COLLECTION OF ANTIQUITIES. Curated by Alla RUDENCHENKO, PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Member of the Union of Designers of Ukraine, Head of the Department of Decorative Arts and Restoration.

BOHUSLAV FAIR has been known for over 400 years. Once upon a time, Bohuslav hosted large trade fairs that gathered more than 10,000 attendees. At the fair, local craftsmen will present their unique products and share their secrets at masterclasses. Among the workshops: weaving, straw weaving, motanka doll making, beading, dybynets painting, and decorating gingerbread. Learn more about the folk art of the Bohuslavshchyna and create your own souvenir at the workshops.

And what would Bohuslav Fair be without the BUBLEYNYTSIA? Come and find out exactly who that is.

Gastro-court “SHYNOK” with delicious food and drinks. Taste the traditional cuisine of Bohuslavshchyna: these dishes were discovered during local history expeditions and through the culinary notes of our grandmothers. Delicious kulish based on old Cossack recipes, a workshop on cooking “Polish Fish in Jewish Style” and an auction “Money for Fish”.

LOCATION OF JEWISH CULTURE: Bohuslav was home to a large Jewish community in the nineteenth century. At this location, you will have a chance to learn more about Jewish national culture, traditions, clothing, and everyday life traditions.

LOCATION OF POLISH CULTURE: The Church of St. Wladyslaw was the centre of the cultural and religious life of the large Polish community in Bohuslav. Therefore, this location will tell all about national Polish traditions and culture.

THE STAGE. A charity concert with artists and bands. The stage programme includes multicultural old-world Bohuslav – Ukrainian, Jewish, Polish.

DAY STAGE. 12:00-16:00.

12:00-12:15 – opening of the Portal to the nineteenth century.

12:15-12:30 – vocal group “Zhinochi Vytrebenky” (“Ladies’ Whims”) from Hostomel city, a winner of international competitions in Ukraine and so far in Romania. Headed by Tetiana Apanasenko, artistic director – Tetiana Zubenko.

12:30-12:40 – amateur art collective “Berehynia” (“Hearth Mother”) of the village club of Moskalenky, Bohuslavshchyna. Headed by Olena Sukhodolska.

12:40-13:00 – vocal trio “Zhorzhyny” (“Dahlias”) of the Shevchenkove Cultural and Recreation Centre of the Shevchenkove village council. Headed by Lisa Chukhlib, Shevchenkove village, Cherkasy region.

13:00-13:00 – Jewish culture of the Bohuslavshchyna.

– Oksana Palchyk, independent researcher, local historian, professional guide. Fascinating facts about the history of the Jewish community of Bohuslav.

– Bila Tserkva private lyceum “Mitzvah-613”. Quiz. Short performance from the play “Jewish Happiness”.

13:10-13:40 – Polish culture of the Bohuslavshchyna.

– Oksana Palchyk, an independent researcher, local historian, and professional tour guide. Fascinating facts about the history of the Polish community in Bohuslav.

– Yulia Derkach (Kyiv city), creative music teacher, and author of a book with a collection of Ukrainian folk games translated into Polish. Polish folk songs.

– Performance by the NGO ZPIT “Polanie znad Dniepru”. Customs, traditions, folk costumes and dances of Poland.

13:40-14:00 – Ms. Olena Bezruk, Kyiv and Ukraine guide, one of the prominent gastronomic guides in Ukraine. An authentic workshop “Polish Fish in Jewish Style” flavoured with romantic stories. Auction “Money for Fish”.

14:00-15:00 – “The Street”. One of the most common activities for young people in Ukraine used to be the “Street” – traditional open-air parties of girls and boys. Incredible creative boys and girls gathered on the street of Old-world Bohuslav.

14:15 – Yuriy Yezhel (Kyiv city) – Old-world bandura player, employee of the National Museum of History of Ukraine, and student of the studio at the National Bandura Chapel.

14:25 – Mykhailo Grechkyn (Kyiv city) – lyre player, kobzar, rock musician. A graduate of the studio at the National Honoured Bandura Chapel of Ukraine.

14:45-15:00 – ‘troyisti muzyky’ (triplet musicians), a fervent band “Balamuty” (Kyiv city).

15:00-16:00 – ‘troyisti muzyky’ (triplet musicians) perform at their location. On-stage pause. Sound check.

16:00 – tour of the locations of Old-world  Bohuslav.

16:30 – presentation of the exhibition “BRAZHNYKY – Masters of Ukrainian Clothing”.

EVENING STAGE. 16:00-19:00.

17:00 – Gulyaygorod band (Kyiv city). Traditional multi-voiced folk singing of the Naddniprianshchyna.

17:15 – the “Materia” band (Yulia Sovershenna).

17:45 – Svyatoslav Sylenko – bandura player, composer, actor, traveller, founder and leader of the “SVIATOSLAV” band.

18:15 – Vitaliy Kalinichenko, leader of the band “VEREMIY” (accompanied by Tetyana Sobakar on violin).

19:00 – GG GulyayGorod, an ethno-electro project that combines Ukrainian folk with modern dance music. The project’s special energy blend includes fervent DJ mixes combined with folk vocals, violin, and flute.

Besides, there will be PHOTO ZONES, tours of the event locations, quests, exhibitions, and a spectacular setting.

We believe that during the event “Portal Through the Centuries: Old-World Bohuslav” each of you will find something for yourself among the various locations and activities!
